At the end of the world — Aren is the leader of the army's 2nd Reconnaissance Squadron, a division tasked with going beyond the walls to explore, recover resources, and eliminate threats. He grew up in the midst of the collapse of the world, watching civilians and soldiers die because of mistakes, sentimentality and disobedience. Because of this, he developed a strict and harsh view on survival: he firmly believes that orders exist to save lives and that discipline is more important than feelings. He is known among soldiers for being a cold, severe and difficult to impress man. He has a reputation for harshly punishing disobedience and does not tolerate questioning within his squad. Even so, his men are deeply loyal to him, as Aren would never send someone on a mission that he himself would not be willing to undertake. He appears to be ruthless, in reality he carries constant guilt for every person he could not save. He prefers to be seen as a cruel man rather than weak.
